Restaurant Astoria is, I must say, my greatest discovery by now.
Have you heard of the discount called ‘The week of Restaurants’ held in Croatia. This has been the third year, and for the first time the sale took place not only in Zagreb but all over Croatia.
The idea is not completely new but seems ingenious to me. It brings the top restaurants and cuisines to us, “average” people. Average by financial standards.
During the two weeks you can taste dishes that will sweep you off your feet for only 100 kunas (13.5 €). Three course meals + a glass of wine. Could it get any better!?
I must admit, I have never heard about this Restaurant before, and was attracted by their the most attractive occasional menu among all Restaurants in Split vicinity.
It seems they put themselves in this with all their hearts. I appreciate that.
You can reach them by main road from Airport or Split via Trogir, continuing nearby Hotel Medena and entering the very entrance to Seget Vranjica. Approx. 4-5 km from Trogir. It is easy to spot looking from the road and there are a lot of parking places in front of the Restaurant. Astoria is also an Aparthotel. The Restaurant is in the ground floor, and apartments upstairs. It can receive around 80 persons inside and about that many on a terrace.
We were greeted warmly by the lovely waitress. She directed us to a table and immediately offered a high chair for juniors. The only thing I could complain about visit to this restaurant is a little dirty high chair. I regret for mentioning this now, but I promised to myself to write everything I notice.
Well, take a look what we have enjoyed, a few days ago.
While we were waiting for appetizer, they served us a pre-appetizer. Yummy Those were three different spreads. Salsa spread, cream based spread and fish spread. All three so much different and all of it yummy.
Then the appetizer arrived. Marinated shrimp on arugula and octopus salad. Both perfectly spiced. Fresh. You could feel the very taste of shrimps and octopus, and perfect light spices that emphasize main aromas. I really like arugula and I think that it perfectly fits with shrimps. I would also notice that they use domestic arugula, because it did not have so large and regular leaves like we often see in supermarkets.
The main courses. Thrilled again. Very attractive visually. I shot it multiple times from all sides. The waitress laughed and suggested that we start eating before it gets cold. One dish was “Bass fillets in tomato sauce and basil”, with boiled potatoes, zucchini and fresh cherry tomatoes as a side dish.
Take a look at the photo, isn’t it attractive. Bass is a light whitefish from Adriatic, has moderate taste, especially when boiled like this. Vegetable balls seasoned with butter. Very tasty.
The other dish was “Monkfish medallions in a shrimp sauce”. Nice pieces of fresh monkfish, topped with cream based shrimp sauce. Perfectly balanced aromas again. A dish for every fish lover.
And then deserts. Already fed up we wanted just to taste the deserts, and it also swept us off our feet.
Fried bananas with chocolate ice cream, some cream, strawberries and mint for decoration. Believe it or not, those were my first fried bananas ever. I really don’t know why I never tasted it before. But these I will surely remember because it was the first. Delicious too. Despite the pressure in my stomach I “destroyed” it all, for not to insult the chef.
My husband ordered strawberry cream which I could make to taste because I was preoccupied with bananas But I will believe him, he liked it.
All along, we had red wine to drink, Plavac Kuna Pelješac. Food and wine, no more than 100 kuna(13,5 €) per person. Looking at the menu, I would say that it was a discount of at least 60%.
The next ‘The week of the restaurants’ is scheduled I think for spring so if you can not wait, visit the Restaurants web pages instead. Attractive as their cuisine. Rich menu. Cold and warm appetizers, soups, whitefish, bluefish, crabs, shellfish, squids, side dishes, barbecues, “a la carte”, steaks, light dishes, salads, pastas, cheeses, asparagus, deserts … So many choices. You would be satisfied for sure.
Wines: Croatian, foreign, open wines and sparkling wines. French, Italian, Chilean, Australian, Portuguese, Spanish, Argentinian. Cocktails.
I sincerely hope we intrigued you. I hope you would visit this Restaurant and share your impressions with us.
Until the new review eat well and regularly.
